Sr. Mechanical Engineer-- Team Lead

The Sexton Corporation/Sexton Precision is a small, dynamic custom engineering and manufacturing company in Salem, Oregon, specializing in the design and fabrication of equipment for extreme conditions and environments. We have a local, nationwide, and international client base and frequently partner with researchers, government agencies, media companies, and private companies. We work with our clients from design and prototyping to full production and contract manufacturing. Sexton is a team environment where we support one another and take pride in producing high-quality, one-of-a-kind parts and products.

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer – Team Lead to join our growing engineering and design staff and provide leadership and mentorship in product design, project management, and quality control systems. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will develop detailed mechanical designs, delegate work to other engineers and designers, and coordinate design for manufacturing and quality control systems.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed mechanical designs for complex systems.
  • Serve as manager of engineering team, including assigning projects, optimizing workflow, and mentorship
  • Liase closely with sales, manufacturing, and assembly teams
  • Build and test prototypes, prepare and deliver design reviews for parts and assemblies
  • Design and conduct tests to validate design compliance with customer requirements
  • Contribute to sales and proposal efforts when called upon
  • Attend meetings between research, design, software, and manufacturing partners
  • Creation and maintenance of technical documentation

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • 4+ years of mechanical engineering experience
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience is essential
  • Expert in 3D Design Software (Autodesk Inventor preferred)
  • Experience with prototype development and design for manufacturing methods
  • Strong design skills, managing through ambiguity, and adept at technical problem-solving
  • United States Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a project management role
  • Willingness to take a hands-on approach and lead by example
  • Experience developing underwater or marine environment products

Lead CNC Machinist

Sexton is seeking a Lead Machinist to join our growing team and lead our 2nd shift team with the primary responsibilities being for the quality and quantity of work performed under their charged as well as the training and safety of the 2nd shift crew.  

Essential Functions: 

  • Serve as lead machinist for 2nd shift (2:30pm-1:00am) and share expertise and knowledge to machinist on shift and maintain operations during shift. 
  • Responsible for assigning and explaining daily tasks and monitoring work progress of the shift 
  • Maintain and approachable and positive demeanor towards the team 
  • Ability to set up and operate machines, such as lathes, mills, grinders, presses, drills, and auxiliary machines, to make metal and plastic products. 
  • Observe machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunctions, adjusting machines as necessary to produce high quality parts. 
  • Work towards continuous improvement in the machine shop. 
  • Ability to properly adjust feed rates, cutting speeds, depths, and angles. 
  • Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition. 
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products. 
  • Inspect workpieces for quality defects, and measure workpieces to determine accuracy of machine operation, using rules, templates, or other measuring instruments. 
  • Inspect products for accuracy, quality, and workmanship upon delivering to finishing table prior to part moving onto the next department. 
  • Participate in training, safety, and quality programs. 

 

Work Environment: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. There is often a high noise level in the work environment.  

Physical Demands: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The position requires frequent lifting, pushing and pulling objects that are 50 pounds or heavier. 

 Skills & Training Desired 

  • Associates degree and/or trade school certification in machining or equivalent. 
  • Proven experience (3+ years) as CNC operator 
  • Skill in operating CNC machinery and tooling as well as precision measurement tools 
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical documents and drawings 
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong math skills 
  • A keen eye for detail and a results-driven approach 
  • Good communication abilities and ability to work as part of a team 
  • High school diploma or equivalent; certificate or diploma in engineering or relevant discipline is a plus 
  • Ability to problem-solve and think analytically & critically 
  • Experience working independently with progressive responsibility 

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, from 2:30pm-1:00am, unless specified by manager.
